Tradition Maori Kai
  • Kai is the Maori name for food.
  • Before weapons such as guns and metal tools the Maori used the resources they had around them help them hunt, fish and grow cultivating crops.
  • The Maori harvested there food from the forest, streams, the sea and their own garden
  • The traditional Maori Kai diet was based on birds, fish and supplements by wild herbs a d roots
  • In their own garden they grew root crops such as potato and Kumara ( sweet potato )
  • Maori used a hangin to cook their Kai which are underground ovens, they also used natural pools of boiling Warner and stream water.
  • In traditional hangi cooking Kai such as meat and vegetable were cooked underground.
  • Maori still continue to harvest and hunt eels, fish and Kina from the sea and streams
  • Puha is also a crop Maori harvest and it is a greens leafy vegetable found growing wild.
  • Eels, tuna were the Maori favorite along with many spices along the coastline
